Pregnancy outcomes, offspring mortality and successive bodyweight until adult were monitored. The experimental protocol was conducted using ICR-outbred pregnant mice given 10 % alcohol, with or without maternal taurine supplementation during gestation and lactation. This study aims to investigate protective roles of taurine against maternal alcohol consumption on growth and development of offspring. However, it is still unknown whether taurine can exert its protection during development of central nervous system and whether it can reverse alcohol damages on developed brain later in life. Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, is essential during development, and continually found to be protective against neurotoxicity and various tissue damages including those from alcohol exposure. Both MO and MOT mothers displayed evidence of fatty liver accompanied by alterations in key markers of hepatic lipid metabolism. Taurine normalised maternal plasma TNF-α and glutamate concentrations in MOT animals. A MO diet resulted in maternal hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia and increased plasma glucose, glutamate and TNF-α concentrations. Too much sitting down will kill us? That’s a real problem. Thus far, some of the problems being “solved” by smartwatches – from phone-less phoning to our deep, animalistic need for yet another device to beep when someone likes our Instagrammed sandwich – have been fatuous. The first marketing challenge of a new gadget is to convince us that it’s solving a problem. Consider buying (or asking your boss for) a stand-up desk to spend the day on your feet. If you have a desk-based job, remember to get up once an hour for a stretch and a stroll, or set an alarm on your smartphone (or – gasp! – your non-smart watch) to remind you.ĭrink so much water you have to go to the loo regularly. Of course, you don’t need a $349 smartwatch to tackle this problem. So, “sitting is the new cancer”? “Over-sedentary lifestyles are contributing to lots of deaths” would be a less controversial way of putting it, even if it makes for a slightly less punchy headline. The WHO also claims that even in 2008, around 31% of adults weren’t active enough. In January 2015, a new review of 47 studies backed up that conclusion, citing increased risk of heart disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes as being linked to sitting down too much – again, regardless of other physical activity.įinally, the World Health Organization claims that physical inactivity is “the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality” – behind high blood pressure, tobacco use and high blood glucose, since you ask – causing an estimated 3.2m deaths a year. loafing about on the sofa) suggested “raised mortality and CVD (cardiovascular disease) risk regardless of physical activity participation”. There are certainly a lot of doctors thinking (and writing) about that. ![]() The issue, in both cases, is the health risks of an over-sedentary lifestyle. Cook’s point might be better understood by comparing like for like: “sitting is the new smoking” or “heart disease is the new cancer” for example – although the latter could still cause offence. One problem with the phrase “sitting is the new cancer” is that it compares an action (sitting) to a disease (cancer). He won’t have used the word lightly, so what was he getting at? Cancer is still the same cancer that it has always been, and many people with personal experience of it will bridle at language describing it like an out-of-date fashion trend.īear in mind, though, that Cook is one of those people: he watched his colleague and friend Steve Jobs battle with and ultimately succumb to pancreatic cancer in 2011. Is sitting really the new cancer, though? On one level, obviously not. ![]() ![]() ![]() The studies reviewed differ in many ways, in addition to the type of endpoint that is assessed. The present analysis assessed whether optimism is more strongly related to subjective than objective physical health outcomes. In contrast, harder disease endpoints primarily reflect outcomes that are biological in nature or outcomes that can be objectively determined (such as immune parameters or mortality). They also share important method variance with the manner in which optimism is assessed (i.e., via self-report). As such, these reports are influenced by a host of factors (e.g., memory biases) other than the underlying disease state. Self-reported outcomes are very subjective in nature and rely completely on the respondent as a source of information. For example, softer endpoints would include self-reports of symptoms or a clinical judgment about disease state whereas, a harder endpoint might be mortality. The term “physical health” is quite broad and includes outcomes that reflect disease endpoints that are “softer” or “harder” in nature. One way to distinguish between the effect sizes (ES) of different studies is to take into account the manner in which physical health is assessed. The meta-analysis was used to identify and evaluate potential reasons for these differences. The strength of the association between optimism and health varies across studies. First, we wanted to examine moderators of the relation between optimism and physical health. In addition, the meta-analysis was used to gather information about two other areas of interest. Additionally, Chida and Steptoe focused on only one outcome, mortality whereas, the present review focuses on multiple outcomes.Īs stated, the primary aim of this paper is to assess the extent to which optimism is linked to physical health outcomes (broadly defined). Inasmuch as subanalyses were not conducted on specific predictors, it is difficult to tell whether optimism alone predicts health outcomes. The review by Chida and Steptoe differs from the present review in that they defined positive psychological well-being quite broadly, including variables such as vitality, life satisfaction, and positive affect, in addition to optimism. The second review, by Chida and Steptoe, examined quantitatively the association between positive psychological well-being and mortality. Additionally, their review was qualitative whereas, the present review is quantitative. Thus, the focus of the review by Pressman and Cohen and the present review are distinct. Although positive affect and optimism are related constructs, they are not the same. First, Pressman and Cohen provided a qualitative review of the literature linking positive affect to health. Two other recent reviews are relevant here. The purpose of the present paper is to provide a quantitative, meta-analytic review of the research exploring links between dispositional optimism and physical health. This is an important oversight inasmuch as not all studies report significant associations (e.g., ). Thus, the nature of the association between optimism and physical health has not been explicitly assessed. Īlthough research on optimism and health has flourished, there has been no systematic review, qualitative or quantitative, of this specific literature. For example, research shows that optimistic people, compared to those more pessimistic in outlook, report less pain, better physical functioning, experience fewer physical symptoms, and are less likely to be rehospitalized following coronary artery bypass surgery. Many of these studies have shown optimism to be protective. ![]() Within this larger framework, a number of studies have explored the link between dispositional optimism (the generalized expectation that good things will happen) and physical well-being. Interest in the relationship between personality characteristics and physical health has increased substantially over the past several decades. ![]() ![]() The first step in any video project is importing media, and it’s extremely easy to do in Movavi Video Editor.
